Mobile Phones

Buy and sell mobile phones in Guatemala.

Outside the cities, one of Guatemala’s two mobile networks often reaches where the other drops, which is why a phone that holds two lines is worth more here than its spec sheet suggests. So with any phone, new or pre-owned, start with whether it takes two chips, a chip and an eSIM, or an eSIM alone. After that comes the familiar choice between an iPhone and the many Android brands, with plain button phones and the odd Lumia for collectors alongside. Ask a seller which network the phone has been used on and whether both slots have been tested.

Where iPhones, Android phones and Lumias part ways:

at the operating system, which decides the apps, the accounts and how long the phone keeps getting updates. iPhones run iOS and come from one maker, so the choice is mostly generation, size and storage. Android phones span Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, Honor and a long tail of budget brands, and there the update window matters as much as the hardware. Windows phones are for collectors: Microsoft stopped supporting them and WhatsApp no longer runs on them, so a Lumia is a curiosity rather than a daily phone. Button phones for an older relative sit alongside them; cases, chargers and screen glass go under phone accessories. Switching sides needs planning: an iCloud backup will not restore onto an Android phone, nor a Google Drive one onto an iPhone, so move your WhatsApp chats phone to phone before the old one goes.

Phones that carry a line on both networks:

come in three kinds, and listings rarely say which. Most mid-range Androids take two physical chips, but on many budget models the second slot doubles as the memory-card slot, so you choose between a second line and extra storage. iPhones sold in Guatemala pair one chip with an eSIM. Those bought in the United States from the 14 onwards, recent models bought in Mexico, and the iPhone Air wherever it was sold have no tray at all and run on eSIM alone, which both local networks activate as long as the phone is unlocked.

The repair bill hidden in a cheap used phone:

is nearly always a battery or a screen, and repair shops here charge settled rates for both. A new battery runs from around Q300 on an older or budget phone to about Q1,000 on a recent iPhone Pro, and a screen from about Q600 on a mid-range Android to well over Q3,000 for a recent iPhone at an authorised service centre. The grade of part explains much of that spread: the same iPhone screen can cost twice as much original as generic. Take that sum off the asking price when a phone is flat by mid-afternoon or cracked in one corner, and ask whether any past repair used an original part, because a generic panel often explains why one phone is listed well below another of the same model.

How a phone that has been opened gives itself away:

look along the edge of the screen for a gap, a line of glue or a frame that sits proud. A replacement panel often shows a slightly different colour or brightness from the original, and on an iPhone, Settings, General, About lists any part that is not genuine or not matched to that phone. Then test what drops and water break first: Face ID or the fingerprint reader, both cameras, the earpiece on a call and the charging port with your own cable. Finally make a call on each slot with a chip from each network: a phone that only finds signal on one is a one-line phone, whatever the listing says.

A phone listing that answers the chip question first:

say how many lines the phone takes and in what form, two chips, chip plus eSIM or eSIM only, and whether it is unlocked. Give the exact model, storage, battery health if the phone shows it, and every repair, with whether the part was original. Photograph the lit screen, the corners and the camera glass, and keep the box to hand so a buyer can match its IMEI to the phone. If your own line lives on an eSIM, move it to your new phone before you erase the old one, then sign out of iCloud or Google and reset. Someone travelling in from Jutiapa or Totonicapán will bring their own chips to try both slots, so meet somewhere both networks have signal.
