Fishing Rods & Reels
Buy and sell fishing rods and reels in Guatemala.
A light spinning outfit for a highland lake and a stiff casting rod with a low-profile baitcaster for snook in the fallen timber of the Río La Pasión belong to different anglers, and both change hands here, new and pre-owned. Rods come in one piece, two pieces or travel sections, in graphite or fibreglass; reels come as spinning, baitcasting, conventional and push-button spincast. Rod and reel have to be built for each other, so check which side of the blank the guides run along before you pair a reel from one seller with a rod from another.

The side of the rod a reel sits on:
that one detail splits everything here. A spinning rod has large guides on the underside and the reel hangs below the handle. A casting rod carries small guides along the top and a trigger under the reel seat, and takes a baitcaster or conventional reel mounted above. Swap them and the line rubs the blank or chokes in the guides. Of the reels that sit on top, low-profile baitcasters such as the Shimano Curado or Abu Garcia Revo are made for casting lures at cover all morning, round reels in the Ambassadeur mould hold heavier line for bait and bigger fish, and star-drag conventional reels fish the bottom or troll from a boat. The closed-face push-button spincast, the Zebco type, is the reel children learn on. Line and lures to load them with are under fishing tackle.
Power, action and a rod for Río La Pasión snook:
power is how much force bends the rod, action is where it bends: a fast rod flexes near the tip, a moderate one further down. Snook on the Río La Pasión hold in fallen trees, and Sayaxché runs a catch-and-release snook tournament on that river, so anglers there use a medium-heavy, fast casting rod that turns a fish before it reaches the timber. A highland lake wants something lighter and softer. Graphite is light and sensitive but brittle wherever it has been knocked; a fibreglass or composite blank such as an Ugly Stik is heavier, forgiving, and the rod to hand a child. A one-piece rod has the best feel but rides badly on a bus or across a motorbike, which is why two-piece rods are the usual choice and travel rods break down small enough for a backpack.
Where a baitcaster’s value sits:
a name-brand low-profile baitcaster starts at around Q1,000 new, and the models snook anglers save up for cost about twice that, while the rod is the cheaper half of a serious outfit. Second hand, a reel’s price follows its brakes and bearings rather than its looks: one that still free-spools long and quiet keeps most of its value, and a scuffed side plate takes little off. A rod works the other way round. Once a graphite blank has a nick or a shortened tip, it is worth its guides and handle and not much more.
Testing a used reel and rod by hand:
on a spinning reel, flip the bail several times. It should snap shut every time; a tired spring lets it close mid-cast. Turn the handle backwards and the anti-reverse should stop it dead, with no play. Push the small line roller with a fingernail: if it will not turn, it has been twisting line. On a baitcaster, press the thumb bar and flick the spool. It should run on smoothly, with the level-wind travelling evenly as you wind. On the rod, run your fingers down the blank for nicks and flat spots, because graphite that hit a gunwale or a car door breaks there later, with a fish on. Check a two-piece for wobble at the joint, and compare the rod with the length printed on it. A short one has lost its tip and had the tip-top glued back onto the stub.
Listing a baitcaster by the hand it winds with:
left or right is fixed when it is built, unlike most spinning reels, so put it in the title. Give the rod’s power, action and pieces as printed, and say whether the reel has been stripped and greased. A good reel often goes faster on its own, since buyers already own the rod they like; a starter outfit sells better as a pair, perhaps with the sun shirt and pliers from fishing clothing and accessories listed alongside. Hand the rod over in a tube or its cloth sleeve. The one that rides home from Mixco across the back of a motorbike unprotected is the one that turns up later with a nick in the blank.
