Pre- & Postpartum
Buy and sell pre- and postpartum products in Guatemala.
The one machine most mothers end up shopping for is the breast pump: a hand pump for the odd bottle, or a double electric one for a mother going back to a job in the capital, who will express between meetings and carry the milk home through the evening traffic. Around it sit nursing pillows, cooler bags and the boxes of storage bags and nursing pads bought before the birth. With pumps, whether the box is still sealed matters more than usual, because most are made for one mother only. Maternity clothes and postpartum support belts live under Baby.

Unbranded double pumps and the brand-name kind:
most electric breast pumps sold in Guatemala fall on one side of that line, and the difference goes beyond the logo. The unbranded doubles are light, charge from a USB cable and get a mother through a few months, but some are open systems with nothing between the milk and the tube, and their spare valves and cups are hard to find once one splits. Brand-name pumps are mostly closed systems, with a membrane that keeps milk out of the tubing and motor, and their replacement kits stay on sale for years. Wearable pumps, with the cups inside the bra, turn up on both sides. A mother who expresses only now and then may need neither: a manual lever pump, or a silicone collector that catches what leaks from one side while the baby feeds on the other, costs little and never needs charging. New, an unbranded double electric pump starts around Q250 and rarely passes Q800, while a brand-name closed-system double starts around Q1,500, with the wearables above that. The extra money buys the months after more than the motor: a cracked valve you can replace, and milk that stays out of places nobody can clean. A pump still sealed in its box, often a second one from a baby shower, sells close to its new price. Once opened, a home pump loses most of its value.
A double pump for the commute from Mixco or Amatitlán:
battery life matters more than suction strength. A mother who sits in traffic both ways and expresses at the office needs a rechargeable motor or one that runs off the car’s USB socket, an insulated bag with gel packs and enough bottles for the day. A pump that only works from the wall socket is fine at home and a nuisance everywhere else.
Nursing pillows, milk storage bags and the boxes bought too early:
fill out the rest. A nursing pillow is a firm crescent that wraps the waist and lifts the baby to the breast, in dense foam or tightly packed fibre under a zip-off cover. It is not the long U-shaped pillow of late pregnancy, which sits under pregnancy with maternity clothes and nursing bras. Milk storage bags, disposable nursing pads and postpartum pads bought in the last weeks change hands sealed and in date, or not at all. Prenatal vitamins sit under supplements, and baths and diapers for the baby under baby care.
Single-user pumps, multi-user machines and a flattened pillow:
most home pumps are built for one mother: milk vapour can reach the tubing, and on an open system the motor, and none of it can be cleaned out for someone else. The pumps that can honestly pass between families are the unopened ones and the heavy multi-user machines built for hospital use, which each new user fits with her own new kit of cups, valves, membranes and tubing. On one of those, ask for the hours on the counter, make sure the charger is the original, look for cracks in the case and check that kits for that model can still be found in the country. On a nursing pillow, unzip the cover. Foam that stays dented after you press it, or fibre balled into lumps, no longer holds a baby up.
Listing a pump that never left its box:
is simple when the photos do the work. Show the seal from every side, the model printed on the box and the cup sizes included, and say why it is spare: a gift, a second one bought by mistake. For a multi-user machine, give the hours and say whether the kit with it is new. Sealed boxes of storage bags or pads go best as one lot, expiry dates in the picture. Whoever comes from Retalhuleu or San Marcos to collect is often the partner or a grandmother, sent while the mother rests, with two things to check: the cup sizes in the box, and that the charger belongs to that pump.
