Virtual Reality

Buy and sell virtual reality headsets in Guatemala.

In Guatemala, virtual reality usually means a Meta Quest: a headset with its own processor and battery that you pull on, mark out a play area around the furniture and start playing, with no console or computer behind it. Alongside it sit PS VR2 headsets for the PS5, older PlayStation VR sets with their camera, and the kit that makes an hour inside one comfortable: rigid straps with a battery at the back, silicone face covers and prescription inserts. New and pre-owned both belong here, including headsets retired by the companies that rent VR out for corporate events and brand activations.

The console under the TV decides the headset:

a Meta Quest needs nothing else, a PS VR2 needs a PS5, and the original PlayStation VR needs a PS4 with its camera. A Link cable also turns a Quest into a PC headset. A PS VR2 runs off a single USB-C cable to the console and does not work on a PS4; a Windows PC can drive it through Sony’s adapter. The first PlayStation VR still plays on a PS5, but only PS4 VR games, through Sony’s camera adaptor. If the PS5 is already at home, the PS VR2 belongs with your PlayStation; otherwise a Quest is the whole setup, and it streams Xbox Cloud Gaming onto a virtual screen for anyone already paying for Game Pass on Xbox.

Straps, face covers and prescription inserts for a Quest:

the soft strap in the box is the first thing most owners replace, usually with a rigid one carrying a battery in the back pad, which takes weight off the face and adds play time. These parts are made for one model. A Quest 2 strap, face cover or controller grip will not go on a Quest 3S, while the Quest 3 strap fits both the 3 and the 3S, so an accessory listing needs to name the headset it fits. Prescription inserts are made to one person’s eyes and help only a buyer who shares the prescription. Between the two current headsets, the lenses are the real difference: the Quest 3 has pancake lenses, which stay sharp to the edge and adjust smoothly to the distance between your eyes, and the 3S keeps the Quest 2’s Fresnel lenses, softer away from the centre, with only a few fixed steps.

A PS VR2 on top of a PS5, and a Quest 2 running out of updates:

a new PS VR2 sits close to Q5,000 in Guatemala on top of the console it plugs into, which is why most people start with a Quest. Used values follow software support more than age. Meta has already published the date the Quest 2 stops getting security updates, so it is the cheapest way in and loses ground every year, while a Quest 3 or 3S with clean lenses and a healthy battery holds far more of its price.

Quests that have worked the corporate-event circuit:

the firms around the capital that hire headsets out for team days and brand activations eventually sell them on, and a headset from that life has been on more faces and through more charges than a home unit sees in years. Ask for a fresh face cover and make sure the headset has been released from any company device management, or it will keep answering to its old owner. On any used headset, draw a boundary, sweep both controllers behind your head and watch for hands that jump or drift, then look at a plain white menu for a dark patch on the screens, the mark sunlight leaves when it falls through the lenses. On a Quest 2 with an Elite Strap, look at the plastic arms where they meet the headset, which is where they crack.

Handing over a headset with its account removed:

games bought for a Quest or a PS VR2 belong to the seller’s Meta or PlayStation account, not to the headset, so a used one arrives empty however many titles it once held. Say so plainly. A Quest needs removing from the Meta Horizon app and a factory reset; a PS VR2 stores nothing, so only the PC adapter, if it came with one, needs mentioning. Give the exact model and storage, how long the battery lasts, any lens marks, and which extras go with it. Whoever drives in from Chimaltenango or Zacapa will want to stand in your living room and see their own hands through the passthrough before paying, so charge it fully, wipe the face cushion and clear a space where they can swing an arm.
