Tablets
Buy and sell tablets in Guatemala.
The same photo of a slim black tablet can be a child’s cartoon machine, a student’s notebook with a pen, or an unbranded model that will never see a software update. New and pre-owned iPads, Samsung Galaxy Tabs, Xiaomi Redmi Pads and Lenovo tablets are listed here, often with the cover, keyboard or pencil that came with them. Outside the bigger towns many homes have no fixed internet line, so check whether a listing is Wi-Fi only or takes its own chip before you arrange to see it.
Galaxy Tab, Redmi Pad or iPad, and who each one suits:
at the bottom sit the small Android tablets: Samsung’s Galaxy Tab A range, Xiaomi’s Redmi Pad and Lenovo’s Tab M line. They cover video, school apps and calls, and most families hand one to a child inside a thick foam bumper. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S FE and S Lite are the cheapest way to get a pen, because the S Pen comes in the box. Apple’s line climbs from the base iPad through the mini and Air to the iPad Pro, which illustrators pay extra for. For mostly books, an e-reader is lighter and easier on the eyes in sunlight; for essays and spreadsheets, one of the laptops beats a tablet with a keyboard cover clipped on.
Wi-Fi only or a tablet with its own chip:
it matters more in Guatemala than the box suggests. Fixed internet is still rare in homes outside the cities, so a Wi-Fi-only tablet in a village outside Nebaj lives on the phone’s hotspot, or on whatever was downloaded before leaving town. A cellular version takes a prepaid chip and works wherever there is signal. Recent cellular iPads take only an eSIM, so ask your carrier whether it will put an eSIM on a tablet before paying for that version.
Pencils, storage and updates on a tablet:
pencils do not cross between iPads: the Apple Pencil Pro pairs only with recent Air, Pro and mini models, so pair any pencil with the tablet in front of the seller. Storage is the spec people regret. The smallest size fills after a few apps and a term of downloaded videos, and an iPad has no card slot, while most Android tablets take microSD. Updates decide how long it stays useful. Apple supports iPads longer than most Android makers, an unbranded tablet may never get an update, and once the bank’s app or the school’s platform stops installing, the tablet is finished however quick it feels.
Resale value on an iPad and on a budget Android:
a base iPad costs around Q4,500 new, and on an entry Galaxy Tab the cellular version runs a few hundred quetzales more than the Wi-Fi one. Second-hand, an iPad that still runs the current iPadOS fetches around Q2,000 to Q3,000, because years of updates go with it. An iPad Apple has stopped updating, such as a fifth-generation iPad, drops below Q1,000, and a budget Android a few years old is worth little, with its battery aged, its software stalled and a new one not much dearer.
Account locks, battery and the fake-spec tablet:
start with the accounts. On an iPad, Find My has to be off and the seller’s Apple Account removed; on an Android, the Google account must come off before the reset, or the tablet will ask for it on first start-up and be useless to you. Ask the seller to do both while you watch. Take a kids’ tablet out of its bumper, because cracks start at the corners and hide under the foam. A screen lifting from the frame means a swollen battery and a reason to walk away. Charge it with your own cable and drag an icon across the screen to find dead zones. On an unbranded tablet advertised with huge memory at a low price, check in the Google Play settings that the device shows as Play Protect certified; the cheapest fakes do not.
Handing over a tablet a child has outgrown:
many used tablets come from a family moving a child up to a phone, or from someone who bought one for online classes and stopped. Photograph the About screen with model and storage, the corners with the case off, and what goes with it: cover, pencil, charger. State whether it is Wi-Fi only or cellular and, if cellular, nano-SIM or eSIM. Erase it and sign out at the handover, so the buyer watches it start fresh. And if the buyer coming from Tecpán will run it on a phone’s hotspot, let them connect it to their own before paying, because that is the connection it will live on.
