Android Phones

Buy and sell Android phones in Guatemala.

Samsung’s Galaxy range sits alongside Xiaomi’s Redmi and Poco, Motorola’s Moto G and the cheaper Honor, Infinix and Tecno handsets, new in the box or pre-owned. A good share of them started out in a carrier’s prepaid pack, and a phone sold that way can stay locked to that network long after the credit has run out. Whether it is unlocked, and how long the model will keep getting security patches, are the two facts that decide what a second-hand Android phone is really worth here.

Galaxy, Redmi and Moto phones, from entry level to foldable:

at the cheap end, the basic Galaxy A models, the Redmi A line and Honor, Infinix and Tecno compete on battery and screen size and give up speed and storage to get there. Most buyers settle in the middle, where a Galaxy A36 or A56, a Redmi Note or a Moto G brings an AMOLED screen and a camera that copes indoors. Above them sit the Galaxy S and S Ultra, Google’s Pixel and Xiaomi’s numbered flagships, and then the folding Galaxy Z Flip, Z Fold and Motorola Razr, whose hinge is one more thing to wear out. Anyone still weighing up Apple will find iPhones listed apart, and cases, chargers and screen glass are under phone accessories.

Storage and patch support on an Android phone:

buy more storage than you think you need, because WhatsApp photos and voice notes fill a phone faster than apps do, and memory card slots now survive mostly on cheaper models. The support window for updates runs from the model’s launch, not from the day you buy it, so a phone that sat boxed in a warehouse has already used up part of it. Brands differ widely here: Samsung and Google promise the longest support, while many budget makers commit to very little.

New Galaxy and Redmi prices against a used flagship:

a new mid-range Galaxy A or Redmi Note costs from around Q1,500 to Q4,000 in Guatemala, while a current Galaxy S Ultra lists between Q12,000 and Q15,000. That gap is what makes an older flagship tempting. Two or three years on, an Ultra changes hands for not much more than a new mid-ranger, because whoever buys it inherits a battery past its best and fewer years of patches. Samsung promises six years of updates on recent Galaxy A models and seven on the S series, so a well-kept S can still have more support ahead of it than a brand-new budget phone.

IMEI, network lock and Google account on a pre-owned Android:

dial *#06#, check that the number matches the box, then search it in the SIT’s online database of phones reported stolen or lost. Put your own SIM in and make a call to settle whether the phone is unlocked; lifting a carrier lock is the original owner’s errand, not something sorted on the spot. Then have the seller sign out of Google and reset the phone in front of you. If it asks for the previous owner’s account afterwards, do not pay, because only they can lift that lock. A boxless “Ultra” at a giveaway price with a mismatched IMEI is almost always a clone.

Screen and battery wear on a second-hand Galaxy or Redmi:

a plain grey image at full brightness shows AMOLED burn-in, and a thin green vertical line on a Galaxy tends to spread rather than fade. Dull colours or an in-screen fingerprint reader that no longer responds usually mean a cheap replacement panel has gone in. A screen lifting at one edge points to a swelling battery and is a reason to walk away. On a Samsung, the Samsung Members app runs a diagnostics check that includes the battery and the charging port.

Listing your old Galaxy, Redmi or Moto G:

give the exact model code from the About phone screen, since a Redmi Note comes in several versions with different support, plus the storage, the last patch date and whether it is unlocked or tied to a network. Photograph the lit screen on a plain background, the frame corners and the camera glass, and mention any repair. Remove your Google and Samsung accounts before the reset, and keep the box with its matching IMEI ready: a buyer coming in from Villa Nueva or Chimaltenango will want to match that number and see the phone take their own SIM before any money changes hands.
