Headphones

Buy and sell headphones in Guatemala.

Most pairs here are bought for the ride: a city bus crawling along the Carretera a El Salvador, a Transmetro packed shoulder to shoulder before work. The choice runs from wireless earbuds such as AirPods and Galaxy Buds to noise-cancelling over-ears from Sony and Bose, gaming headsets for console and PC, and wired pairs that still cost the least, all of it new or pre-owned. Copies of AirPods are sold openly under the real name, so with any pair, sealed or used, the deciding test happens on your own phone before money changes hands.

Earbuds, over-ears and open-ear headphones:

three shapes for three different kinds of day. True wireless earbuds from Apple, Samsung, JBL or Soundcore disappear into a pocket. Over-ear noise-cancelling headphones from Sony and Bose block more noise and stay comfortable through a long trip, at the cost of bulk. Open-ear and bone-conduction models such as Shokz leave the ear canal free, which is why people who run or cycle in traffic wear them: the car behind you stays audible. For sound that fills a room rather than your head, look at speakers.

Noise cancelling on a city bus and the phone in your pocket:

active noise cancelling, ANC, works best on low, steady sound, so the engine drone of a bus stuck in traffic drops away while a vendor calling out at the door or a phone playing reggaeton at the back still gets through. Transparency mode matters as much once you step off and cross the road. AirPods earn their price alongside one of the iPhones and Galaxy Buds keep a few extras for Samsung Android phones; on anything else both are ordinary Bluetooth earbuds. Many recent phones have no headphone jack at all, so a wired pair needs a USB-C version or an adapter.

Gaming headsets and the console they plug into:

a PS5 or an Xbox Series will not pair with ordinary Bluetooth headphones, so wireless headsets from HyperX, Logitech or PlayStation’s own Pulse line connect through a small USB receiver or the console’s own wireless link. A used wireless headset listed without its receiver may be useless on a PlayStation. A Nintendo Switch does take Bluetooth headphones, and a wired headset plugged into the controller works on all of them.

AirPods Pro and the copies sold under their name:

genuine ones go for a little over Q2,000 new in Guatemala, while the copies, often offered with cash on delivery, sell for around Q400 or less. A sealed “original” priced near the copies is a copy. A used genuine pair is worth what the current generation costs new less the battery it has lost. When Apple brings out a new generation the previous one drops quickly, and that is the moment to look at a pre-owned pair.

Testing used AirPods, Galaxy Buds and over-ears:

do it on your own phone. On an iPhone, many copies bring up a “Cannot Verify AirPods” alert, and a genuine pair opens its own settings page with the model, the firmware and a separate serial for each bud. A serial that checks out on Apple’s site proves little by itself, because copies reuse real ones. Switch noise cancelling on and off: on a genuine pair the room goes quiet, on most copies the change is hard to hear. Green or dark residue on the metal charging contacts, left by sweat, is the usual reason one side stops charging, and a bud that runs flat well before the other has a tired battery. Single buds change hands because people lose one, and a replacement has to match your case’s model and generation exactly. On over-ears, turn ANC on somewhere noisy and listen for a whistle or crackle in one cup, which points to a damaged microphone. On wired pairs, wiggle the cable at the plug while music plays.

Generation, battery hours and the receiver in a headphone listing:

buyers who have heard about clones want proof before they travel. Photograph the settings screen showing the model and serials, the case and the charging contacts up close. Name the generation exactly, including whether the case charges by Lightning or USB-C, since AirPods Pro generations look almost identical. Say how long a charge lasts now, whether a bud was ever replaced and what comes with it, down to the spare tips or a gaming headset’s USB receiver. Reset them before you meet, and pick somewhere quiet enough for a buyer from San Miguel Petapa or Santa Catarina Pinula to pair them with their own phone and make a short call to hear the microphone.
