Commercial Freezers

Buy and sell commercial freezers in Guatemala.

In a neighbourhood corner shop the freezer earns its keep on small things: bananas dipped in chocolate by hand, bags of ice, ice lollies for children on their way home from school. Restaurants and butcher’s shops need the other end of the scale, a stainless upright that holds the week’s chicken or a chest deep enough for whole cuts. Chest freezers with solid or glass lids, upright reach-ins and ice-cream display cabinets turn up here new and pre-owned. Many of the chests sold in Guatemala are dual units that switch between freezing and chilling with a dial, so ask the seller which way theirs has been set.

Chest freezers, glass lids and the dual setting:

the chest freezer does the heavy lifting in small businesses. Its cold settles in the box and stays there when the lid opens, so it holds more for the money than anything with a front door. Mabe, Frigidaire and GRS are the names on most of the white ones. Sliding or curved glass lids turn the box into a display for ice cream and ice lollies, but display models run warmer and are built to keep frozen stock frozen, not to freeze fresh meat from room temperature. Dual chests, which switch to chilling, suit a corner shop that sells ice in the heat and cold drinks the rest of the time. Upright freezers trade capacity for reach. Stainless solid-door units stand in restaurant kitchens where cooks want trays at eye level; glass-door versions show frozen fries in minimarkets. Every opening lets the cold spill out at the bottom, so an upright depends on its door seal far more than a chest does. Stock that only needs to stay cold belongs with commercial refrigerators, and the stoves and fryers a freezer feeds are under commercial kitchen appliances.

A chest freezer through a power cut:

away from the capital a storm can take the electricity for hours. Full and with the lid shut, a chest stays frozen far longer than an upright. Power coming back in a surge does more harm than the cut, to the compressor and to the control board on digital models, so a voltage protector is cheap insurance in Petén or Jutiapa alike. Ask whether the freezer ran on one: a unit that rode out years of spikes without it has had a harder life than its paint suggests.

Sealed coils and the price of a chest freezer:

new, chest freezers run from about Q3,500 for a small one to around Q8,000 for the big chests a butcher’s shop fills, with glass-lid display versions costing more than a solid lid of the same size. Against new boxes at those prices, the case for a used one rests on its sealed circuit. A chest freezer’s coils run inside its walls, under the foam, so a leak there cannot be patched the way a fridge’s exposed tubing can, and the repair usually costs more than the freezer is worth. Pay for proof that it freezes, not for the year on the plate.

Frost, lids and liners on a used freezer:

ask the seller to run it empty from the night before with a bottle of water inside, which should be solid when you arrive. Feel the outer walls: on most chests they run warm, because that is where the heat leaves, and walls that stay cool while the compressor hums suggest it is short of gas. Heavy frost in one corner or along the rim means the gasket no longer seals or the hinges have sagged. Check the inner liner for gouges: owners who chip ice off with a knife sometimes pierce the coil behind it, and that freezer is finished. Rust on the cabinet floor, from defrost water or seafood brine, tells you how it was looked after.

Capacity, keys and a thermometer photo for a freezer listing:

give the capacity in cubic feet, the outside length and depth, whether it is dual or freezer only, and whether the lock still has its keys. Photograph it running with a thermometer inside and readable, then the liner, the gasket and the data plate. Say what it stored, since one that held shrimp needs a different clean from one that held ice lollies, and whether it sits on a ground floor, because a full-size chest is awkward on stairs. Defrost it the day before so it travels dry, and tell the buyer to leave a hand’s width of air around it in its new spot, since a chest freezer sheds its heat through its own walls.
