Wakeboarding
Buy and sell wakeboarding gear in Guatemala.
In Guatemala a wakeboard is usually pulled by an open outboard boat or a jet ski rather than a purpose-built wake boat, and a lot of the riding starts from the dock of a weekend house on Río Dulce or Lago de Izabal. That shapes the gear: boat boards with a forgiving rocker for a small wake, open-toe bindings that fit whoever turns up, low-stretch ropes, handles and impact vests, and the odd wake skate. Boards, boots and complete packages are listed new and pre-owned, and a set that has spent a few seasons on a sunny dock deserves a close look at the boots.

Boat boards, cable boards and wake skates:
nearly every wakeboard ridden in Guatemala is a boat board, built stiff with moulded fins that hold a line across the wake. Cable boards are softer, often wood-cored, with a tougher base and small or no fins for the rails and kickers of a cable park; behind a boat they feel loose and slow. A wake skate has no bindings, just grip on the deck, and takes real balance before it is fun. Wakesurf boards need the tall wave of a ballasted inboard and should never be ridden behind an outboard, whose propeller sits right where a wakesurfer rides; for waves with no boat involved, see surfing. A board pulled by a kite is built lighter, with straps instead of boots, and sits under kitesurfing.
Rocker and length for an outboard boat’s small wake:
most boats on Guatemalan water are open outboard launches built for fishing or ferrying people, and the wake they throw is low and soft. That should decide the rocker. A continuous rocker, one smooth curve from tip to tail, keeps its speed and pops predictably off a small wake, which suits most riders here. A three-stage rocker, with a flat spot between the feet, jumps higher off a big wake but plows behind a small one and punishes late timing. Length follows weight: heavier riders need more board to stay on top, and a slightly longer one is kinder to learn on behind a slow boat. Without a tower the rope ties to a ski pylon or the transom, so pick a low-stretch wakeboard rope over a stretchy water-ski line to keep the pull steady as you cut out.
Bindings for a wakeboard the whole family rides:
at a house on the river one board often serves parents, teenagers and visiting friends. Open-toe bindings stretch across a spread of foot sizes and suit that board and growing kids. Closed-toe boots fit one rider closely, mould to the foot with use and give sharper control, so they belong to whoever rides most. Older boards and boots do not always share the insert pattern of newer ones, so check that a pair will mount on your board. An impact vest pads falls but floats less than a proper life jacket, which is the one for beginners and children.
Wakeboard bases, inserts and sun-baked boots:
a used board shows its past on the base. Gouges come from beaching it on gravel or dragging it up a ramp, and a chipped moulded fin cannot be swapped out. Press along the rails and around each insert: a soft spot, a bubble in the top sheet or a hairline crack running from an insert means water is reaching the core. Turn each binding screw by hand and feel for an insert that spins. Boots age faster than boards. Left on a dock or a boat deck in the sun, the rubber turns brittle, the foam cracks and the straps stiffen, while liners kept wet in a closed locker grow mould. Ask for a photo of the inside of each boot. A sun-faded rope with fuzzy strands or a knot tied into it is weaker than it looks.
Wakeboards that live at a river house:
give brand, model, length and rocker, then the binding brand and the shoe sizes it fits, and say whether it was ridden behind an outboard boat, a jet ski or a wake boat. Photograph the base flat in daylight, both rails, the fins, the inserts with the boots off and the inside of the boots, and list any rope, handle or vest that goes with it. Plenty of these boards stay on Río Dulce while their owners live in the city, so say where the board actually is and who can open up for a buyer who wants to stand in the boots before paying.
