Plenty of the nail lamps that change hands in Guatemala began life in a course kit. A student enrols in acrylics in the capital or in Xela, the lamp and the drill come with the fee, and a few months later she either has clients or has a case sitting in a drawer. Around it sit the smaller tools of the dressing table, brushes that last for years and tweezers that are only as good as their tips. New or pre-owned, one rule holds: steel and electrics clean up and pass on, anything porous stays with its first owner.

Nail kits from a course that did not stick:

turn up second-hand in much the same shape: an LED lamp and an electric drill, with nippers and brushes packed around them and a layer of powders and gel colours that matter far less. Manicurists who now work in clients’ homes let go of their bulkier salon pieces once they move to a rechargeable lamp and a cordless drill that fit in a bag. The polishes, gels and acrylic powders themselves belong under hand and nail care. Away from nails everything is easier to judge: a make-up brush holds its value if the bristles are dense and the metal collar is tight, while the sponge beside it never comes properly clean and is worth nothing to anyone else. Dryers, straighteners and curling irons have their own place under hair styling tools.

Gel, acrylic and the lamp each one needs:

the technique decides the kit. Acrylic, the powder-and-liquid system, hardens in the air and needs no lamp at all. Gel polish, builder gel and polygel do, and they cure properly only under an LED or dual UV/LED lamp, not the old tube type. A chamber wide enough for the whole hand including the thumb, a timer and an auto sensor matter more than the wattage printed on the box, which cheap lamps often inflate. A desk drill with a corded handpiece is steadier through a long session in a home salon; a cordless pen goes in a handbag to a client’s house in Quetzaltenango but lives by its battery. Beginners do better with hand files for the first months, because the drill is the tool that does the damage in untrained hands. With make-up brushes, synthetic bristles suit liquid foundation and creams and wash out easily, while natural hair picks up and blends powder better.

What a nail kit fetches once the course is over:

less than the student paid, because most of the fee went on the teaching and on material that gets used up. A decent LED lamp bought on its own costs around Q250 to Q500, and a used one keeps a good part of that as long as every LED lights and the sensor responds. In a resold kit the lamp, the drill and the steel tools carry nearly all the value. Opened liquids, powders and gel colours add little, since nobody can say how they were stored, and used files add nothing.

Inside a used nail lamp, every LED should light:

switch it on and look in, because one dark bead leaves a patch where the gel stays soft. Ask to cure a coat of gel on a tip and press it when the cycle ends: a sticky film on top is normal with many gels, a soft layer underneath is not. Run the drill fast with a bit fitted and watch the tip; a wobble or a rattle points to worn bearings in the handpiece, which is the expensive part. Hold nippers up to the light, and the jaws should meet cleanly along the whole edge. A brush that sheds when you tug it gently, or whose head turns in its collar, is near the end. Copies of well-known brush sets and lash tweezers look right in photos and feel light and soft-tipped in the hand. Disinfect anything metal before you use it, and leave used sponges and files out of the deal.

A photo of the lamp with every LED lit:

sells it faster than any description, so add a short video of the drill running. Say whether you used the kit on yourself, on friends or on paying clients, and for how long. List the tools separately from the products, and keep sealed colours apart from opened ones so the buyer knows what she is paying for. A manicurist coming in from Chimaltenango to see your lamp will want to cure a coat of her own gel in it before she pays, so have it plugged in and ready.
