Photo Cameras
Buy and sell photo cameras in Guatemala.
The overnight climb up Acatenango to watch Fuego erupt is what sends plenty of people in Guatemala shopping for a proper camera, and the same trip is behind a good share of the used ones that come back up for sale. New and pre-owned, they range from pocket compacts and long-zoom bridge cameras to Canon and Nikon DSLRs and the mirrorless bodies from Sony, Canon, Fujifilm and Nikon that have taken over the shop counters. Shops file anything with interchangeable lenses under professional cameras, even an entry-level Canon Rebel, so judge a camera by its sensor and its lenses rather than the label.

Where a compact camera ends and a mirrorless body begins:
the line is whether the lens comes off. A compact keeps its lens for life, and premium models with a larger sensor, such as the Canon PowerShot G7 X or the Sony ZV-1, are bought by vloggers for the flip screen and the cleaner picture indoors. A bridge camera looks like a DSLR and carries an enormous zoom, but most sit on the same small sensor as a pocket compact and struggle once the light goes. DSLRs such as Canon’s EOS and Nikon’s D series use a mirror and an optical viewfinder; mirrorless bodies drop it and are where the new models appear. Instant cameras like the Fujifilm Instax print on the spot, and anything that takes a roll belongs in film cameras.
Sensor size decides which lenses a body can grow into:
most entry and mid-range bodies use an APS-C sensor, while full-frame costs more and pairs with bigger, dearer lenses. The trap is mixing the two. Canon EF-S lenses will not mount on a full-frame Canon DSLR at all, and APS-C lenses on a full-frame Sony, Nikon or Canon mirrorless body crop the picture back down. Pick the system for the lenses you will want later. The kit zoom is the cheapest glass you will ever own, and a bright prime lens is the usual first upgrade for portraits. If you mostly want to watch distant birds rather than record them, binoculars cost a fraction of a long lens.
One Canon, two model names:
Canon names its DSLRs differently by market, and cameras reach Guatemala from the United States and from elsewhere, so both versions turn up. A Rebel T7 is the same camera as an EOS 2000D, a T7i is an 800D and an SL3 is a 250D. Search both names before deciding a price is high or low.
Why a camera body loses value faster than its lens:
an APS-C mirrorless with a travel zoom is around Q9,000 to Q12,000 new, and a current full-frame body alone runs past Q20,000. Bodies drop hard once a successor arrives, and they wear: every shot moves a shutter built for a finite number of cycles, far fewer on an entry model than a professional one. A good lens has no such clock and holds its price, so an older body with a better lens than the kit is the strongest used buy. Shutter count is a camera’s mileage. Nikon and Sony write it into each photo’s file data; many Canons do not, so ask for an unedited photo straight off the card and run it through a shutter-count checker.
Acatenango ash inside a zoom ring:
volcanic ash is finer than beach sand and far more abrasive, and a camera carried up to watch Fuego overnight can come back with it in every gap. Turn the zoom and focus rings slowly end to end: grinding or a sticky patch means grit inside. A compact that flashes a lens error as it extends has usually swallowed dust or sand. On an interchangeable-lens camera, photograph a plain sky with the aperture closed right down. Dark spots in the same place on every frame are sensor dust, which cleans; a fine line that never moves may be a scratch, which does not.
Proof of mileage in a camera listing:
give the exact model, both names if it is a Canon, and the shutter count, then every lens with the focal range and aperture printed on the barrel. Add that sky shot and be straight about volcano and beach trips; a careful buyer will find the grit anyway. A photo of the serial number beside the box or receipt shows the camera is yours to sell. Someone driving in from Xela or Chimaltenango will want to try it with their own memory card, so charge the battery and let them shoot a few frames.
