Blue-Ray & DVD Players

Buy and sell Blu-ray and DVD players in Guatemala.

Plenty of Guatemalan homes keep a player connected for one disc that never went to streaming: the DVD the videographer handed over after a wedding, a fifteenth birthday party or a first communion. Playing it takes anything from a basic DVD player for the bedroom TV to a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player for the living room, new or pre-owned, along with portable players for the car. Before paying, turn the machine over. DVDs made for Latin America are region 4, and a player bought in the United States is set to region 1, so it refuses any film marked 4 alone.

A DVD player, a Blu-ray player and a 4K Ultra HD machine:

differ in the discs they read, and each plays the older formats but never the newer one. A DVD player handles DVDs and CDs, and the better ones have HDMI. A Blu-ray player adds Full HD Blu-ray discs. A 4K Ultra HD player adds 4K discs with HDR, and only earns its place in front of a 4K set from televisions. Portable players with their own screen, made to strap behind a car seat, and karaoke DVD players with microphone sockets turn up too. Look at the back before anything else. A player with only yellow, red and white plugs may find no matching input on a newer TV.

Region codes on a DVD and the globe on the back label:

explain most disappointments. Guatemala falls in DVD region 4 with Mexico and South America, while the United States and Canada are region 1. Many discs sold here carry both codes, but a player bought in the States will refuse a film marked only 4. The number sits in a small globe printed on the back of the player and on the disc case; an all-region player is marked ALL or 0 and plays either. Blu-ray is gentler: the Americas share region A, and almost no 4K Ultra HD disc carries a region lock. Power is no issue: US players run on the same 120 volts.

A PlayStation or Xbox as the disc player:

is often already under the TV. A PlayStation 4 plays Blu-ray and DVD but not 4K discs; a PlayStation 5 with its disc drive, an Xbox One S and an Xbox Series X play all three. The Xbox Series S and the digital PS5 come without a drive. A dedicated player runs quieter, but if a console already lives in the living room, look through video games and consoles before buying a second box.

4K Ultra HD players from brands that have left the business:

hold their value better than any other disc machine. New, the Sony and Panasonic models that remain start at around Q2,000, several times a plain DVD player at a few hundred quetzales. Samsung, LG and Oppo have all stopped making disc players, so theirs only come from another owner. A used DVD player sits at the other end: its value lies in HDMI and reading burned discs, and a new laser costs more than the machine, so one that skips is a parts unit.

A burned DVD-R from a family event as the test disc:

says more about a used player than any film. Home and event discs are recordable DVD-Rs, which reflect less light than pressed discs, so a tired laser fails on them first: it hesitates, skips or shows “No disc”. Bring one burned disc and one pressed film, and jump a few chapters on each. A tray that stalls or will not open usually means a perished rubber belt, a cheap fix at any repair bench. On an early Blu-ray player, ignore the streaming buttons, as many of those apps have gone, and make sure the remote comes with it: without one, the setup menu is out of reach.

Photos of the back label and a disc playing:

do most of the selling. Photograph the label with the model and region globe, the outputs, and the player running. Say which discs it reads, whether it came from the United States, and whether the remote and HDMI cable are included. If the films are going too, offer them with the player and note which are region 4, region 1 or both, because a buyer with a machine from the States will care. Someone driving in from Escuintla or Quetzaltenango will want to watch it read a disc of their own before paying, so meet where there is a TV and a socket.
